Portrait of Young Girl

Portrait of a Young Woman (Italian: Ritratto di Giovane Donna) is a tempera on wood painting by the Italian Renaissance painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, circa 1490. Measuring 44 × 32 cm, the painting is now in the Calouste-Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. The figure depicted is reminiscent of the Sassetti family frescoed by the artist for the Sassetti Chapel in the church of Santa Trinita in Florence. She is dressed in the Florentine fashion of the time, with a superimposition of close-fitting clothes and a neck adorned with a coral necklace. Ghirlandaio's female representations, like Botticelli's, are subject to an aesthetic commitment that favours idealistic stylisation and the decorative unity of the whole, at a time when portraiture was spreading among the bourgeoisie and a taste for realistic characterisation of the figure. The delicate balance of forms and the harmony of chromatic associations suggest an aspiration towards an ideal of order as a principle of composition. This phenomenon corresponds to a general trend towards the humanisation of art. A fine example of Quattrocento representations, the figure has his head turned three-quartered, against a neutral background, in keeping with the practice prior to the introduction of landscape as a background. The cut is slightly below the shoulders and the face, although treated without excessive attention to detail, bears witness to a quest for naturalistic figuration, a desire to "make it real".
