Spring. Great Waters (Russian: ?????. ??????? ????) is one of many paintings by Isaac Levitan dedicated to the awakening of nature in spring. It is exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Made in 1897, its dimensions are 64.2 × 57.5 cm.
The painting depicts the moment when water has covered the entire coastal area, forming a veritable flood on the banks of a river or lake. The water is still and calm, reflecting the still bare branches of the trees, under a sky of very light, high altitude clouds. The canvas is coloured in subtle shades of blue, yellow and green. The blue range predominates, combined with the yellow of the banks and tree trunks at the water's edge, the green of a fir and oak tree and the barns in the distance. Blue remains the most diverse colour in the painting: the water and sky are filled with shades ranging from dark blue to the almost white tone of the clouds.
The painting is harmonious and very seductive, one of Levitan's most lyrical canvases. It is full of joy and tranquillity, full of optimism derived from the spectacle of nature's spring [...]
This artwork is a painting from the modern period. It belongs to the naturalism styles and realism styles.
