Prise de la Smala d'Abd-el-Kader par le duc d'Aumale à Taguin, le 16 mai 1843
La Prise de la smalah d'Abd-el-Kader par le Duc d'Aumale à Taguin, 16 mai 1843 (The capture of Abd-el-Kader's smalah by the Duke of Aumale at Taguin, 16 May 1843), painted by Horace Vernet in 1845, is on display at the Musée de l'Histoire de France in Versailles.
With its extraordinary dimensions (21.39 m wide and 4.89 m high), it is considered to be the largest painting of the 19th century.
The painting was commissioned by Louis-Philippe I just after the events it was intended to glorify, and was completed in less than two years by Horace Vernet (no doubt with the help of his pupils). It was exhibited at the Salon de Peinture in 1845, and again in 1855.
A propaganda painting, it showcases Louis-Philippe's son, the Duc d'Aumale, and highlights a battle that is less crucial than it appears.
The main piece in the Salle de la Smalah at the Château de Versailles, this painting, along with several others illustrating the conquest of Algeria, was intended to magnify the feats of arms of the king's various sons and restore a constrained power.
The painting, an oil on canvas, is 4.89 m high and 21.39 m long, covering an area of more than 105 m2.
It is the most imposing painting of the 19th century and one of the largest in the history of painting on canvas.
Presenting a panoramic view, it shows several stages of the famous battle, from left to right. More than a hundred figures, French soldiers on horseback or on foot and the troops of Emir Abd-el-Kader in the group of tents [...]
This artwork is a painting from the classical period. It belongs to the romanticism style.
