Roses dans une coupe
Roses in a Cup is an oil painting on canvas by Fantin-Latour, painted in 1882 and exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris under the inventory number RF 1961 25. The painting measures 36.5 × 46 cm.
Against a monochrome background, this small painting shows a brown bowl of ten or so roses in full bloom in a double bowl, the stems of which are not visible. Two bright pink roses catch the eye in the middle, the others are cream, paler pink and yellow, while a white rose with small buds stands out on the left. A white rose and another in pink are placed to the left of the scene on a white stone table top, lit from the left. The composition is punctuated by dark green foliage.
The painting is dated and signed Fantin in the top right-hand corner.
The painting belonged to the Buckler collection until 1906, and then to the collection of Dr Eduardo Mollard until 1961, when it was donated to the Louvre, which placed it in the Musée du Jeu de Paume. It was transferred to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986, where it is still on display.
In 2016-2017, it was shown at the "Fantin-Latour à fleur de peau" exhibition held at the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, then at the Musée de Grenoble. Previously, it was shown in Japan (1982), Cairo (1998), Brazil (2012-2013), Krakow and Warsaw [...]
