Roses under the Trees, detail
Roses under the Trees is a painting by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt circa 1905. This oil-on-canvas painting is a landscape depicting trees under which roses can be seen.
In 1891, Klimt met Emilie Flöge, who became his muse and companion. Klimt spent his summers with his family every year on the shores of Lake Attersee, where he painted many landscapes, including this work, which is based on direct observation of the place.
For more than twenty years, Klimt spent his summers with Emilie and her family in Litzlberg, on Lake Attersee, a large picturesque lake in the Viennese district of Salzkammergut. During these stays, Klimt used to visit a castle on a small island and paint the trees, bushes and flowers. A light easterly wind, called Rosenwind, blows through the castle's rose garden and fills the air above the lake with the scent of flowers. This is what inspired Klimt to create this painting.
Acquired by France in 1980, the painting was conserved at the Musée d'Orsay when, in March 2021, it was announced that it would be returned to a Jewish family who had been the victims of spoliation by the Nazi regime.
The main feature of the painting is the foliage on a narrow strip of meadow. Klimt created a series of touches of bright blue, yellow, pale pink, mauve and brown paint throughout the painting, in which there are mainly brief oblique marks of various greens.
