Rythmus der Baüme (Rythm of the Trees)
"Landhaus am Attersee", also "Forsthaus in Weissenbach I", is a landscape by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. The painting is part of a private collection and has been on display at Galerie Belvédère since 2018.
The landscape depicts the now preserved house in Weissenbach, on the southern shore of Lake Atterse, which the artist rented for the summer between 1914 and 1916. The same forest house on the outskirts of Weissenbach is also depicted in another landscape - "Forest House at Weissenbach II", or "House Garden". Klimt used to travel from Vienna on summer holidays with the Fleughe family, but in recent years he had become increasingly in need of company and sought solitude, and in this house he lived alone, although he spent all his time with Emilia Fleughe in the circle of her family, who lived nearby. His later landscapes, deserted and frozen in time, reflect his admiration for the sensual power of nature, transforming the surrounding countryside into an earthly paradise of eternal summer. The lush variety of colours in the foreground betray the artist's passion for all things flowery. The structure of the landscape, rather than the dotted lines of colour, lends immortality to the individual objects. The landscape composition is framed by dark bushes on both sides.
The "Country House on Attersee" was acquired by a wealthy businesswoman and client, Jenny Steiner, for her own art collection. She was one of the few people who managed to emigrate to the United States after [...]
