Paul Nash (1889-1946) was a British artist and pioneer of Modernism in British art. During his studies at the Slade school of Art he developped his strengths as a landscape painter and proceeded to paint some of the most iconic paintings of World War I, anchoring this history in the art historical moment of Modernism. His later works incorporated elements of abstraction and surrealism which added layers of symbolism to his landscapes.
