Tempête, côtes de Belle-Île
"Portuguese Woman" is a painting by the French artist Robert Delaunay, painted in 1916. The painting is in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemis in Madrid (Carmen Thyssen-Bornemis collection).
The First World War surprised Robert and Sonia Delaunay in the seaside resort of San Sebastian in Spain. After a short stay in Madrid from June 1915 to March 1916, they settled in the Portuguese village of Vila do Condi, near Porto. Both were captivated by the warm, clear light of northern Portugal, which they captured in a series of works on the theme of village markets. Although Robert Delaunay had already experimented with abstract painting in 1912-1913, unlike artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and František Kupka, he did not see abstraction as an end in itself.
In this painting, figurative and abstract elements are combined, reinforcing the dynamism of the colour combinations. Delaunay achieved maximum saturation of colour using the technique of mixing oil and wax, which he would not return to after leaving [...]
