The Artist's Garden at Vetheuil
The Artist's Garden at Giverny is an oil on canvas by Claude Monet, painted in 1900 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
It is one of the artist's many works of his garden at Giverny during the last thirty years of his life. The painting shows rows of irises in various shades of violet and pink set diagonally across the picture plane. The flowers are situated under trees and are bathed in light effects that change the tone of their colours. In the background, beyond the trees, we can see Claude Monet's house.
Monet was 60 when he completed this painting and had already produced a large number of works. He had already achieved extraordinary success and fame. By this time, according to William Seitz, he was analysing what he saw more and more until "the object, the sensation and the pictorial object became identical".
In 1900, the year of this painting, he was engaged in two major projects: a series of paintings of the River Thames in London and another series of his water gardens at Giverny, including some of his famous paintings of water lilies, such as The Water Lilies (now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).
His dealer Durand-Ruel exhibited recent works, including a dozen Water Lilies, and he bought his friend Renoir's painting The Mosque (an Arab festival).
Monet lived in Giverny from the end of 1883 until his death. During this period, he worked on this painting in particular.
