The Baptism of Christ by John the Baptist

The Baptism of Christ is a painting begun by Andrea del Verrocchio and completed by Leonardo da Vinci between 1472 and 1475. It depicts Saint John the Baptist giving baptism to Christ in the waters of the Jordan. It is on display at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The Baptism of Christ measures 177 × 151 cm. It is painted in oil and tempera on poplar wood panel. The support is made up of six boards glued vertically, three wide and three very narrow. Finger marks characteristic of Leonardo da Vinci's style of painting can be seen on the body of Christ. The painting was restored in 1998 by Alfio Del Serra. This involved removing various overpaints, particularly in the sky, as well as traces of varnish that had obscured the painting, particularly around the body of Christ. The Baptism of Christ was painted for the church of the Vallombrosan monastery of San Salvi. It then moved to the monastery of Santa Verdiana. In 1810, it was acquired by the Galleria delle Belle Arti in Florence, then by the Uffizi Museum in 1914, where it is currently on display. The painting depicts Saint John the Baptist giving baptism to Christ with the water of the Jordan poured from a cup that he holds above his head and carries in his left hand, with his staff crossed, a phylactery on which can be read the Latin text "ECCE AGNUS DEI QUI TOLLIT PECCATA MUNDI", which means "Here is the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world".
