Tobie and the angel
Tobias and the Angel (in Italian, Tobiolo e l'angelo) is a painting by Andrea del Verrocchio and his workshop, whose date of completion is estimated at between 1470 and 1480. Leonardo da Vinci, a pupil of Verrocchio, may also have been involved in this painting. Wilhelm Suida, David Allan Brown, Pietro. C. Marani, credit him with the dog and the fish.
The subject is taken from the Book of Tobias (an extract from the Old Testament). Tobias is sent by his blind father to collect a debt. On his way, he is accompanied by the archangel Raphael. They camp along the Tigris. A big fish jumps out of the water. Raphael said to him: "Catch the fish and don't let go" (Tob 6:3). He explains to Tobias how, by extracting the gall, heart and liver from the fish, he can cure his father's blindness.
Verrocchio depicted Tobias and Raphael walking together. Tobias is holding the fish in his left hand. The angel Raphael is holding a box containing the remedy. A dog accompanies them, as it says in the Book of Tobit (Tob 6:1): "The child went with the angel, and the dog followed behind".
Piero Pollaiuolo's Tobias and the Angel, once in the Orsanmichele and now in the Sabauda Gallery in Turin, was undoubtedly the model for Andrea del Verrocchio's painting.
