The Embrace
The Embrace (Loving Couple II) (Umarmung (Liebespaar II)) is a painting by the painter and draughtsman Egon Schiele, painted in 1917.
In 1914, the artist befriended two sisters, Adèle and Edith Harms, who lived opposite his studio. Thanks to the intervention of certain people who recognised his talent, he was exempted from military service, and did his war service in the administration. This allowed him to continue painting and exhibiting. Four days before his war service, on 17 June 1915, he married Edith Harms, three years his senior, thus ushering in a less tormented period in his creative career.
He obtained permission to spend his free time in his studio in Vienna.
Umarmung (Liebespaar II) shows a man and a woman embracing. It is a self-portrait of Schiele and his wife Edith. They are lying on a crumpled white sheet on a yellow bedspread. The woman's head is lying on the pillow, her face turned away and her hand resting on her partner's shoulder. The pose is a reference to the painting The Kiss by Gustav Klimt, whom Schiele admired and whose work he had [...]
