The Gardens at the Sorolla Family House
The Garden of the Sorolla House is an oil on canvas by the Spanish post-impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla, painted between 1918 and 1919. The painting is part of the legacy that formed the collection of the Sorolla Museum.
The painting shows one of the gardens of the painter's Madrid home, which now houses the Sorolla Museum. The painter himself drew the preliminary plans for the garden. The painting shows the "First Garden", which was created after the influence of Andalusian elements and the gardens of the Alcazar in Seville. This area was the first to be built in late 1911, when the Sorolla family moved to Madrid.
Between 1915 and 1920 Sorolla painted his garden from various vantage points. This version is one of the last. It depicts the central area of a typical Spanish garden: the white marble spring at the centre of which are four paths. In the background, exuberant plants can be seen climbing up the façade of the house and surrounding the azulejo bench.
