Saint Francis of Assisi Receiving the Stigmata is a tempera and gold painting on wood (313 x 163 cm) by Giotto, produced for the church of San Francesco in Pisa and now in the Louvre in Paris. It is signed "Opus Jocti Florentini".
It depicts an important episode in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi when, while praying on Mount Verna, he receives the stigmata of Christ who appeared in heaven in the form of a seraph. Three episodes from the saint's life are illustrated on the predella: Pope Innocent III's dream of Saint Francis supporting a church on the verge of collapse, the Pope's confirmation of the rules of the order, and his preaching to the birds to demonstrate that the Word of God is addressed to all living beings.
Giorgio Vasari mentions the work in his Lives as being present in the church in Pisa, in the Ughi chapel in the transept (Vasari cites it as originally adorning the rood screen). Although it is not without controversy, today the attribution of the painting to the great Tuscan master is generally accepted, not least because it is signed, with a date that generally oscillates between shortly before or shortly after the frescoes of the Stories of Saint Francis in Assisi, or between 1295 and 1300. To this day, this work is considered above all to be from the beginning of the century, commissioned by the Franciscans of Pisa immediately after the unveiling of the Assisi cycle, of which it reproduces some of the most striking scenes.
