The Lake at Montgeron OF Claude Monet
The artwork
The Lake at Montgeron
Pond at Montgeron is an oil painting on canvas (172x193 cm) produced in 1877 by the French painter Claude Monet. It is kept in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.
The painting depicts a pond, with a female figure leaning against a tree trunk, observing the water, half confused with the surrounding vegetation.
The wealthy financier Ernest Hoschedé, who had bought a number of Monet's paintings, invited the painter to his estate in Montgeron in the summer of 1876, where the pond depicted in the painting was located. The woman in the background could be Camille, Monet's first wife, or Madame Hoschedé, who later became the artist's companion.
This painting was exhibited at the third Impressionist exhibition. From the Morozov collection in Moscow, the painting was exhibited in Saint Petersburg from 1930.
