The Little Lady
The sculptor Camille Claudel spent the summer of 1891 with Auguste Rodin at the Château de l'Islette in the Loire Valley in France. It was there that Camille hid her pregnancy and the loss of her child, and it was in this peaceful setting that the sculptor began the portrait of La petite châtelaine, which she completed in 1864. The model was a six-year-old girl named Marguerite Boyer, granddaughter of the château's owner, Madame Courcelles. The girl posed for around 62 hours over the course of two summers. The final modelling took place in the summer of 1893. This is mentioned in a letter from Camille to Paul Claudel, her brother, in which she tells him about the exhibition at the Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1894 under the title La Contemplation.
