The Seine at Rouen

The Seine at Rouen is an oil on canvas by the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet, painted in 1872 and now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. It measures 54 × 65.5 cm and depicts sailing boats moored on the quays of Rouen on a sunny day. The painting is remarkable for its vertical and horizontal construction: the trees and their foliage echoing the boats, and the effects of light on the Seine. This painting was part of the Otto Krebs collection, which was confiscated in 1945 as reparations for war damage suffered by the USSR. It is now in the Hermitage Museum and has been on public display since 1995. A retrospective of Monet's works (including The Seine in Rouen) was held at the Hermitage Museum from February to May 2002, with paintings on loan from all over the [...]
