The Three Graces

The Three Graces is a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, painted in 1639 and depicting the Three Graces. The work remained in the artist's personal collection until his death in 1640, when it was acquired by Philip IV, who brought the painting back to Spain in 1666, where it was conserved in the Royal Alcázar in Madrid before hanging in the Prado Museum. Rubens produced three other variations on the theme of the Three Graces, including a grisaille in 1620. Rubens renewed the classical genre of the representation of the Three Graces through a baroque treatment of nude figures, barely veiled and with opulent flesh. The painting depicts three goddesses and daughters of Jupiter in the service of Venus, the goddess of love. All three are nude and full-figured, two seen from three quarters and one from behind. Rubens depicted them beside a fountain, beneath a garland of flowers and against a landscape background. The round, pasty faces are inspired by classical sculpture, and the arms and calves are thick. The colour and variations in light accentuate the plastic beauty of the bodies and the contrast between the bright, luminous landscape in the background and the shady canopy in the foreground.
