Tondal's Vision
"The Vision of Tondalus" is a painting by a disciple of Hieronymus Bosch in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid.
It depicts the vision of Tondalus, the story of an Irish knight who, in a state of apparent death, has a vision. The scene on the left shows people being tormented in a stream. In the background, on the right, a number of people are being roasted in a burning doorway. Before that, people sitting at a table in a giant helmet are being tormented by demons. On top of the helmet is a bed surrounded by monsters.
Representations of the vision of Tondalus are more common in the work of Hieronymus Bosch and his followers. There are many editions of the story. A Middle Dutch translation was first published in Antwerp and, in 1484, in Bosch's home town of 's-Hertogenbosch.
