Tondal's Vision

"The Vision of Tondalus" is a painting by a disciple of Hieronymus Bosch in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid. It depicts the vision of Tondalus, the story of an Irish knight who, in a state of apparent death, has a vision. In this vision, an angel takes him on a tour of hell, where he is confronted with his worldly life. The protagonist is asleep in the bottom left-hand corner. Below him, in Gothic letters, is the inscription "visio tondaly". Behind him, the angel points to Hell, which is depicted in the rest of the painting. In the centre is a large mask with round windows for eyes. From its ears grow two trees. On his head is a man with a monkey and two owls. Through the nose of the mask, money flows into a bathtub, in which several people are bathing. In front of the bath, a man is sitting on a dice while being tormented by two demons. The scene on the left shows people being tormented in a stream. In the background, on the right, a number of people are being roasted in a burning doorway. Before that, people sitting at a table in a giant helmet are being tormented by demons. On top of the helmet is a bed surrounded by monsters. Representations of the vision of Tondalus are more common in the work of Hieronymus Bosch and his followers. There are many editions of the story. A Middle Dutch translation was first published in Antwerp and, in 1484, in Bosch's home town of 's-Hertogenbosch. The work is a composition of several motifs from Bosch's works. The overall [...]
