Tournée du Chat Noir
Tournée du Chat noir is a poster by Swiss painter Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, produced in 1896 to promote the Parisian cabaret Le Chat noir, in Montmartre. It features a reference to Rodolphe Salis, the owner and operator of the cabaret.
The full text is very simple: "Prochainement Tournée du Chat noir de Rodolphe Salis".
This colour lithograph, measuring 40 centimetres wide by 62 centimetres high, depicts a black cat on a yellow and red background. The cat's head is surrounded by a red halo inscribed with the motto "Montjoye Montmartre", parodying a medieval war cry ("Montjoie! Saint-Denis!").
It has been reproduced in many media, including posters and postcards, and original copies are kept in many museums.
The poster has been reproduced many times. It has become one of the many symbols of Parisian picturesqueness, and its image can be found in a large number of derivative products sold in tourist shops in the French capital. It can also be found as a decorative element on all sorts of everyday objects: tin cans, kitchen trays, wall hangers, illustrated tiles, etc.
