Untitled OF Wassily Kandinsky
The artwork
Untitled
First Abstract Watercolour is a pencil, watercolour and ink painting on paper (49.6×61.8 cm) produced in 1910 by the painter Vasily Kandinsky. It is kept at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Critics claim that abstraction began with this painting.
It was Kandinsky himself who noted the birth of abstract art in one of his statements. The watercolour is a shapeless sketch reminiscent of a child's doodle. In this watercolour, he wanted to experience the human being's first contact with the world, with a reality about which he knew nothing. The image is characterised by several coloured patches: a few large, transparent, expanded veils, particularly at the top of the sheet, seem to introduce a sense of floating depth into the white surface.
