Woman portrait
The portrait of Giulia de' Medici holding a book in her hands, fastened with a knot, is an oil on panel by Agnolo di Cosimo, known as Bronzino. The painting is also known as Portrait of a Young Woman with a Book.
The painting is presented in a carved and gilded 17th-century wooden frame. Unknown is the name of the young woman depicted, who is conventionally referred to as a Duchess of Medici. Adolfo Venturi, examining the painting in 1933, noted the absence of the blue background, typical of Bronzino's last period of activity, and therefore attributed the work to around 1545.The pearl-grey heavy silk dress, with its square spur, slightly raised epaulettes and curled, embroidered sleeves, is of great elegance. The embroidered white shirt has a small collar, fastened with a wide-link gold chain. Other jewels include a ring on her finger and a small crown on her straight black hair, parted in the middle. The rigid pose and serious expression can also be found in other portraits of young women painted by Bronzino and kept at the Uffizi, notably those of Bia de' Medici and Maria de' Medici.
