Pierre Alechinsky ( b . 1927) is a Belgian artist whose work encompasses artistic polarities, from abstraction to representation, colour painting to black and white line drawing, Eastern and Western artistic techniques. Alechinsky studied at l'École nationale supérieure d'Architecture et des Arts décoratifs de La Cambre, Brussels in 1944, after which he moved to Paris and was an active participant in the international group CoBrA. In 1954 he moved to Japan after developing an interest in oriental calligraphy through his work in Paris and has since developed a significant international career.
