The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb or Ghent Altar (in Dutch: Het Lam Gods, literally The Lamb of God), completed in 1432, is a polyptych painted on wood, a masterpiece of Flemish primitive painting.
Since 1986, it has been on display in the former baptistery of Ghent's St Bavo Cathedral, which was converted into a vault following repeated thefts.
Commissioned by Joost Vijdt, a wealthy churchwarden of St John's Church (now St Bavo's Cathedral), for his wife's private chapel, the polyptych was begun by Hubert van Eyck and completed by Jan van Eyck after his brother's death in 1426. It was placed on the altar of the commissioner's chapel in the church of Saint John on 6 May 1432. For safety reasons, it was later moved to the cathedral's main chapel.
The altarpiece represents a "new conception of art", in which the idealisation of the medieval tradition gives way to a rigorous observation of nature and a highly skilful reproduction of optical effects.
The altarpiece consists of a total of twenty-four framed panels, which offer the viewer two different scenes, depending on whether they are in an open or closed position, obtained by folding the panels at the ends inwards. The upper register of the interior of the altarpiece depicts, in red, Christ the King or God the Father enthroned between the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist.
