L'extraction de la pierre de folie
The Lithotomy, also known as The Cure of Madness or, more rarely, The Extraction (or Excision) of the Stone of Madness, is a painting by the Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch. Oil on panel measuring 48 × 35 cm, it was produced around 1494 or later. The painting is currently on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid.

In this painting, Bosch has replaced the "stone" that is traditionally the object of the extraction with a flower bulb. Another flower is placed on the table. In this painting, Jérôme Bosch is mocking the ignorance and deception of the patient. By contrasting good and evil, the innocent with the dishonest man, the genre scene takes on a moral connotation".
The exact date of this painting is unknown. The note accompanying it in the Prado Museum states that it was painted between 1475 and 1480. If this date is confirmed, then it would be one of the early works of Hieronymus Bosch, whose birth is dated around 1450. Recent dendrochronological analyses, however, have estimated that it could not have been painted before 1494.
In 1526, the painting was included in the inventory of the collection of Philip of Burgundy (1464-1524), Bishop of Utrecht, who had died two years earlier. In 1745, the painting is mentioned in the country house of [...]
