Arno Landscape OF Leonardo da Vinci
The artwork
Arno Landscape
The Landscape of the Arno Valley, or simply The Landscape, is a pen and ink drawing (19 × 28.5 cm) authenticated by the handwriting of the Florentine painter Leonardo da Vinci. It is his earliest dated drawing. He himself noted in the upper left-hand corner the day on which the drawing was executed: 5 August 1473, the Feast of Saint Mary of the Snows (di Santa Maria delle Neve addi 5 daghosto 1473). The landscape depicts the Arno valley, near Florence, "as found in the background of many Florentine paintings, notably those by Antonio Pollaiolo".
This work shows the young artist's interest in natural phenomena: rivers, lakes and plants, as well as his mastery of a simple style: "There is very little need for perspective, apart from a few grids simulating the fields in the distance on the plain, the foreground being that of a hill and a rocky spur, a fortified town.
