Boulevard Montmartre

Boulevard Montmartre, soleil après-midi (Dutch: Boulevard Montmartre, afternoon sun) is a painting by French Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro, painted in 1897, measuring 74 x 92.8 centimetres. Part of a series of 14 works, the painting shows a view of the busy Boulevard Montmartre in Paris, as seen from his hotel room. It is currently on display at the Hermitage in St Petersburg. Pissarro would continue to experiment throughout his long painting life, constantly seeking discoveries, change and innovation. In the late nineteenth century, he believed that creating serial works provided him with the artistic freedom he sought. His heart lay in exploring changing light and weather effects, at different times of the day and different times of the year: an Impressionist principle par excellence. The fourteen canvases he made in 1897 of Boulevard Montmartre, one of Paris' largest boulevards, are a prime testimony to this. He painted this series from his hotel room in the Grand Hôtel de Russie, high above rue Drouot. Pissarro worked on his series from February to March. Later, in 1898, he would make another similar series of works of the Place du Théatre Français. In 1901-1902, he concluded his career with a series of works of the Pont Neuf. Boulevard Montmartre, soleil après-midi shows a metropolis in its full glory. We see the wide boulevard, typical of Baron Hausmann's new Paris, at the busiest time of day: late afternoon.
