Two White Peonies and a Pair of Scissors is an oil on canvas (31×46.5 cm) by the French painter Édouard Manet, painted around 1864 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Manet often included still lifes in his work and even gave them great importance and space - think of the bouquet of flowers in Olympia or the overturned fruit basket in Breakfast on the Grass - although he only devoted himself to them in exclusive representations in 1864-1865 and the early 1880s. He used to say this about this pictorial genre: "As you already know, my main ambition is to become the Saint Francis of the still life.
Two white peonies and a pair of scissors is one of Maneti's best examples of still life. The painting depicts two peonies with large corollas and fleshy, brilliant white petals. The two flowers, which alone occupy almost the entire surface of the painting, stand out powerfully, thanks to the tone and vibrancy of the paint layer, against the homogeneous black background. The technique used by Manet in this painting is also very distinctive, executed with pasty, vigorous brushstrokes, so as to make the plants appear plush and soft. Little concerned with detail, the artist here shows great sensitivity to the juxtaposition and contrast of colours, also paying attention to the placement of the yellow, grey and blue shadows that volumetrically emphasise the two peonies. The composition is completed by the apparently random insertion of green leaves.
