"Chemin Montant dans les hautes herbes" is a painting by the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, in oil on linen, measuring 60 x 74 centimetres. It was painted in 1875. The influence of Claude Monet is clearly recognisable. The work is currently at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir had an intense working relationship from 1869, which was first clearly expressed in their joint work at La Grenouillère tavern by Renoir and Monet. Between 1871 and 1877, they often painted together in Argenteuil, Monet's home town at the time. The two painters influenced each other and became two of the most important founders of Impressionism. They were both fervent advocates of 'en plein air' painting, which implied a somewhat ephemeral way of working. The sloping road in the tall grass is one of the few true landscapes in Renoir's work, although he couldn't resist including a few figures. Four blurred figures, painted from a distance, descend a narrow road towards the viewer. In front, a little girl walks, followed by a woman with a red parasol. Behind and in the distance, two men appear to be intensely engaged in conversation: a more common theme in Renoir's paintings. The slope in the tall grass undeniably shows a direct influence from Monet: the resemblance to his poppies of 1873 is unmistakable. Yet the painting has an obvious individuality, particularly in the composition of the colours, which defines the whole. Renoir's measured distribution of shades [...]
