Cheval renversant son cavalier sortant de l'eau

Horses Emerging from the Sea is an Orientalist oil on canvas painting by the French painter Eugène Delacroix, signed and dated 1860, and housed in The Phillips Collection in Washington. Rather atypical among Delacroix's works, it depicts two horses emerging from the water, one of them ridden by a Moroccan rider, near the town of Tangiers. Eugène Delacroix wrote extensively about his fascination with the equestrian spectacle in his correspondence, and reserved a large part of his work for Arab horses and riders. Horses Emerging from the Sea is a late painting, produced a few years before his death, at the same time as Arab Horses Fighting in a Stable. Compared with Horses Fighting, this painting can be seen as a "calmer counterpoint". Both works were produced for the same dealer, Estienne. This painting is surprising compared to the painter's usual style. It is one of the very last Moroccan reminiscences among Delacroix's works. The painting depicts two horses emerging from the sea, one chestnut and one grey ridden by a rider. The city of Tangier is visible in the background. Lee Johnson describes the painting as "perhaps the most invigorating and lyrical of Delacroix's later poetic evocations inspired by his experiences in North Africa". Horses Emerging from the Sea may have inspired Eugène Fromentin's painting On the Nile, as they share many similarities, including the rider guiding two mounts at once, and the proximity of a body of water that may be the Mediterranean or [...]
