Claude Monet on his workshop
Claude Monet peignant dans son atelier, also known as Monet sur son bateau, was painted by Édouard Manet in 1874. The painting depicts his friend Claude Monet at the height of his artistic creativity on his boat, in the verdant setting of Argenteuil, not far from the Monet family home.
Like Daubigny and his Bottin, Monet bought (around 1871-1872) an old boat from which he could observe the light on the river, sometimes called his studio boat". It was in 1874 that Manet drew closer to Monet under the influence of his pupil, Berthe Morisot, joining the Impressionists to paint outdoors. It was also around this time that he helped his young colleague, who was then penniless, financially. The painting shows the scalloped canvas protecting Monet and his wife from the sun. "
The work's title is intended to be ironic, and underlines the importance given by the Impressionists to the concept of painting in the open air, as close to nature as possible. In this painting, Manet deliberately alters his style in an attempt to come closer to that of his friend Monet, whose Impressionism was by nature sharper. The use of Monet's favourite theme, water, is part of the same aspiration.
