"Dancer with Veils" is a watercolour drawing by French artist Auguste Rodin, produced around 1900. The drawing depicts the biblical character Salome in her "dance of the seven veils". The work is currently in the collection of the Musée Rodin in Paris.
Rodin became known as the greatest sculptor of Impressionism, but what is less well known is that he also produced numerous sketches and drawings of a high artistic level, often as studies for his sculptures. The Rodin Museum houses more than 7,000 drawings by him, often also in chalk or charcoal. In his youth, he also took a drawing course.
While as a sculptor Rodin worked mainly with male models, in later life he drew mainly women, often erotic nudes, but also dancers. Ballet was a popular theme in late nineteenth-century France and had previously inspired painters such as Edgar Degas and Pierre Carrier-Belleuse. The expression of dance proved to lend itself perfectly to the transmission of images, whether on canvas or paper. This perceived expressiveness was reinforced when Isadora Duncan introduced modern dance at the end of the nineteenth century, replacing the tutu with loose, transparent dresses. This dance outfit was particularly popular for roles involving Oriental characters.
