Daybreak over Lake Yamanaka
Lake Yamanaka (???, Yamanakako?, literally "lake in the middle of the mountains") is the easternmost and largest of the Fujigoko, the five lakes bordering Mount Fuji. At 982 metres above sea level, it is also the third highest lake in Japan.
It was here in 1956 that marimo, a spherical freshwater algae thought to be found only in cold regions, was found. It has been named "Fuji marimo" and is a species from Yamanashi prefecture. The shores of the lake are home to a large number of restaurants, shops and museums. Many varieties of flowers flourish in a large flower park (the Hana no Miyako K?en) 700 metres from the lake.
Famous for summer sports, the lake attracts many young people for boating, sailing and tennis. Many school clubs find the area ideal for training because of its many facilities.
In winter, wakasagi, or freshwater smelt, are caught here.
