Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips: the bohemian charm of an iconic couple
Dennis Hopper, a legend of American cinema, was also a talented photographer. A lover of photography, he initiated a series of photographs of himself and his wife Michelle Phillips directed by Orlando Suero.
An artist's life in the heart of America
The story of this work dates back to 1970. At the time, Dennis Hopper had just directed his first film, Easy Rider, which earned him worldwide acclaim and an Oscar nomination. At the height of their success, the mythical couple formed by Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips, lead singer of the Mamas and the Papas, decided to settle in New Mexico.
.The meeting with photographer Orlando Suero occurred at an exhibition organized by a mutual friend. Seduced by their personalities and way of life, Orlando Suero decides to spend a few days with them to immortalize their intimacy. Thus was born the idea of documenting the daily life of this atypical family to create a series of snapshots infused with the bohemian charm of the seventies.
The beauty of a work in black and white
The choice to photograph Dennis Hopper and Michelle Phillips in black and white lends the work great authenticity, underscoring the complicity and love between these two exceptional artists.
This contrast also serves to highlight the purity and simplicity of the place, particularly through the textures of the objects and clothes. The natural luminosity used by Orlando Suero reinforces this trend, placing the couple under the photographer's watchful eye in a warm, intimate atmosphere.
The testimony of a society in transition
As we move through these shots, we discover through the couple's settings and attitudes a period of American history marked by the hippie movement, American counterculture and the major upheavals that followed the late 1960s.
This artwork is a photography from the 50's, 60's and 70's period. It belongs to the celebrity style.
