Détail de La Liberté guidant le peuple... OF Eugène Delacroix
The artwork
Détail de La Liberté guidant le peuple
Liberty Guiding the People is an oil on canvas by Eugène Delacroix painted in 1830, inspired by the Three Glorious Revolution. Presented to the public at the Salon de Paris in 1831 under the title Scènes de barricades, the painting was then exhibited at the Musée du Luxembourg from 1863, before being transferred to the Musée du Louvre in 1874, where it was one of the most popular. In 2013, it was the centrepiece of the Galerie du Temps exhibition at the Louvre-Lens.
Having become a symbol of the triumphant Republic, the painting is based on a misunderstanding, as this was not the intention of Delacroix, whose work did not become part of the French collective imagination until the Third Republic. Because of its allegorical aspect and political significance, it has frequently been chosen as a symbol of the French Republic, freedom and democracy around the world. In the 21st century, it remains a media icon (of) the way it has been hijacked, borrowed and appropriated from different artistic expressions.
The painting depicts a scene of a collapsed barricade, crossed by the rioters of the people of Paris who rose up against King Charles X. In the background, emerging from the smoke surrounding Notre-Dame, the bayonets of an infantry battalion can be seen being attacked by gunfire from the windows. The tricolour flag is flying from one of the cathedral's two towers, which places the scene on the right bank of the Seine, probably near the Hôtel de Ville, but no precise topography [...]
This artwork is a painting from the classical period. It belongs to the romanticism style.
« Détail de La Liberté guidant le peuple » is kept at Louvre, Paris, France.
