Deux femmes valsant
At the Moulin-Rouge, Two Women Dancing is a painting produced in 1892 by the French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in oil on cardboard. Measuring 93 × 80 cm, it is housed in the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic.
It depicts one of Toulouse-Lautrec's favourite themes: the nocturnal environment of the Moulin Rouge cabaret in Montmartre, Paris. As always, the painter adopts a realistic and raw position, without embellishment.
The foreground is occupied by two women dancing together, dressed simply. Behind them, a railing separates the dance area from the tables. On the right is the painter Charles Conder, and on the left François Ganzi. The person at the back in the red jacket is Jane Avril, the famous singer and dancer at the Moulin Rouge, and the subject of other paintings by [...]
This artwork is a drawing from the modern period. It belongs to the post-impressionism style.
