Entrée d'Alexandre le Grand dans Babylone ou Le triomphe d'Alexandre
Alexander Enters Babylon" (English: Alexander enters Babylon) A painting by the French painter Charles Le Brun, produced in 1665, depicting Alexander the Great conquering Babylon after defeating the Persians at the Battle of Gogamela and putting an end to the Achaemenid Empire. The painting is in the collections of the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
Alexander, standing in a chariot drawn by two elephants, triumphantly enters Babylon; the Hanging Gardens of Babylon can be seen in the background. Charles Le Brun had chosen a vast subject and needed to find a style that combined the right amount of charisma and solemnity. It was also necessary to maintain the clarity needed to work with the many figures, while conveying the diversity of temples, vases, weapons, musical instruments and costumes that made the scene immediately recognisable. Finally, it was necessary to create the illusion not only of a moving procession, but also of the deployment of a realistic city of figures and bodies.
Alexander, who defeated Darius III of Persia at the Battle of Gaugamela (331 BC), anticipated another battle to capture Babylon. He was surprised to see the city gates open to receive him and his heroes. Le Brun depicts the moment when Alexander, holding a sceptre surmounted by a Victorian sword in his left hand, advances in a chariot drawn by two elephants captured from Darius' army.
