Etude d'après le modèle pour Salomé
Salomé or Tattooed Salomé is a painting by Gustave Moreau begun in 1874 and left unfinished. It is characterised by the addition of motifs over the original painting, giving it the tattooed look characteristic of the painter's last years.
This painting was begun around 1874 and left unfinished. Other Salomés were exhibited at the Salon of 1876. The superimposed motifs were added to this canvas in 1890, after Alexandrine Dureux's death.
Unlike L'Apparition, John the Baptist is absent here"; Salome takes centre stage. This painting is in fact a variant of Salomé dancing before Herod. She is standing in front, naked, slightly swaying, with her face in profile and her left arm raised. In the background are Herod on a throne and the executioner of Saint John the Baptist. A whole decor is superimposed on the canvas, giving it the appearance of a tattoo".
These superimposed motifs are a truly original process that does not originate in any academic tradition. This technique gave Moreau total freedom in the application of colour, which he developed in large patches before covering them with this ornamental net of lines.
