Etude pour la lutte de Jacob et de l'ange

The Struggle of Jacob with the Angel is a mural painted by Eugène Delacroix in the 1850s and completed in 1861, for the Chapel of the Holy Angels in the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. Along with the other murals in this chapel, also by Delacroix, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1908. Commissioned by the City of Paris in April 1849, Delacroix worked mainly in the Chapel of the Holy Angels from 1855 to 1861. He chose three battle scenes to illustrate this theme: Heliodorus driven from the temple on the wall opposite Jacob, and Saint Michael slaying the dragon on the ceiling. The Struggle of Jacob is considered to be one of the painter's last masterpieces. Delacroix prepared the walls in 1850, but was then busy with other commissions. In 1854, it became apparent that the layer of paint used to prepare the walls was not adhering well and that the walls needed to be prepared again. From then on, Delacroix was assisted by Pierre Andrieu, who painted the compositions in broad outline, with the master taking care of the figures and the finishing touches. The sketch of The Struggle was probably completed in the summer of 1855. In 1856, he enlisted the help of the painter Louis Boulanger to prepare the backgrounds. At the end of 1857, he had health problems. At the end of the year, he moved to 6, rue Furstenberg, in what is now the Musée Delacroix, near the church.
