Famille de paysans dans un intérieur
Family of peasants in an interior is a painting by Louis Le Nain dated around 1642.
Louis Le Nain and his two brothers Antoine and Matthieu produced many paintings depicting peasant scenes, and their painting styles were particularly similar. The paintings by the three brothers were simply signed "Lenain". This painting, however, is probably the work of Louis. It is considered his masterpiece. The canvas has a very strong presence: in a dark interior, the figures stare fixedly at the viewer. Note the virtuoso treatment of shadows and light, the delicate treatment of each object and the tonal harmony that brings out the red of the wine glass. Here the painter achieves a formal perfection that enhances the emotional impact of the work."
The picture was painted in Paris around 1648 and is now part of the collections of the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
