Fin d'arabesque ou Danseuse saluant
Dancer with Bouquet (End of arabesque) is a painting by the French painter Edgar Degas, produced around 1877 and housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
In this painting, Degas chose to analyse the bodily attitudes and movements of the female body. In the foreground, we find a dancer waving to the audience at the end of her number, captured in a bold perspective from above, with her arms and legs arranged in a star shape. Degas, in order to increase the dynamism of the composition, did not hesitate to allow himself great freedom of perspective, and chose to depict the dancer from a point of view that, among other things, was forbidden to spectators, for whom a frontal view was intended. Paul Valéry also noticed: the other dancers, caught up in a multitude of movements, are flattened in the background and arranged like figures in an antique frieze. The work achieves difficult compositional and chromatic balances (the whiteness of the dancer's dress in the foreground is counterbalanced by the polychromy of the bouquet). The reverence of the star holding the bouquet of flowers, for example, is performed in very bright light, which is projected onto the various figures with a disturbing acuity. The work, the result of a mixture of paint, pastel and petrol, ultimately bears witness to Degas's unflagging curiosity to experiment with novel formal solutions and, above all, to try out different possibilities in the field of artistic [...]
