Le Foyer de la danse à l'Opéra de la rue Le Peletier
Le foyer de la danse à l'Opéra is an oil on canvas by Edgar Degas, 32x46 cm, in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, painted in 1872.
After his success with "Dance Class" in 1871, Degas continued to draw dancers regularly during rehearsals, making them one of his favourite subjects. Clearly, they were used to his presence at the Opéra.
In the painting, Degas chose to depict the dancers as they finished their exercises at the barre and began, one by one, their exercises in the centre. To the left, Mademoiselle Hughes prepares to perform her exercise, while to the right, the master Louis-Alexandre Mérante, standing and dressed in white, gives his final recommendations. Beside her, to her left, a seated dancer, her face slightly in shadow, is drawn with particular precision. This particularly idyllic and delicate scene is contrasted by the violist, seated to the right of the ballet master: his dark costume and the heaviness of his figure break the harmony of the white tutus and the yellow-ochre walls.
The painting was bought in 1872 by the collector Paul Durand-Ruel'; in 1888 it became part of Henri Vever's collection, and in 1894 it was bought by Count Isaac de Camondo; the Count's entire collection then passed to the Louvre Museum and finally to its current [...]
