Idealised Portrait of a Lady (Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci as Nymph)

Portrait of a Young Woman (Italian: Ritratto di giovane donna) is a painting by Sandro Botticelli, a tempera on wood (82 × 54 cm) dating from around 1480-1485, now in the Städel in Frankfurt am Main. The provenance of the work is unknown. Critics believe that the figure depicted is Simonetta Vespucci, the lady loved by Giuliano de' Medici and who died prematurely in Florence, who had defined her as the "peerless" living ideal of feminine beauty, whose grace, sad smile and hair inspired Alessandro Botticelli. The work has been dated to between 1480 and 1485. If we compare the figure in this painting with other presumed images of Simonetta, such as the one in The Birth of Venus or Piero di Cosimo's Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci, we can see that the physiognomy is very similar. Botticelli also painted a second portrait called Portrait of Simonetta Vespucci. The figure is a female bust, seen in profile looking to the right against a plain dark background.";The face, whose long wavy hair is interlaced with multicoloured ribbons and pearls, has a braid starting from the top of the particularly rich and elaborate hairstyle, topped by a sort of hairpiece "crest" descending towards the nape of the neck. " The image reveals a certain melancholy typical of the painter's work. The long neck, adorned with an elegant choker and cameo, tops a slightly undersized bust. The low-cut garment is elegant and characteristic of Florentine bourgeois ladies, similar to other portraits of the period [...]
