Le printemps ou La Primavera
Spring (Primavera in Italian pronounced: [?prima?ve?ra]) is an allegorical painting by Sandro Botticelli, executed in tempera on wood panel between 1478 and 1482, a period of the First Renaissance.
The exact meaning of this painting remains unknown, although several probable interpretations have been put forward.
This work of art was found in the Medicean villa di Castello of its patron Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici. It was in a room on the ground floor known as the "casa vecchia", along with another work by the artist, Pallas and the Centaur.
The name of the painting comes from Giorgio Vasari's general inventory of 1550, in which he identified it as a celebration of the arrival of spring.
The painting was hidden in the Castello di Montegufoni during the German occupation and returned to the Uffizi (Uffizi Gallery) after the Second World War. It is currently in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
The composition of the work consists of a foreground, with figures in light with lanky silhouettes set off by a darker background.
The women in this work all have similar lanky physical features, hair with wisps well highlighted by dark features, long oval-shaped faces with finely fleshy mouths, straight noses and almond-shaped eyes.
It is a mixture of allegorical figures, both profane (referring to Greco-Roman mythology) and sacred (i.e. Christian religious) against a dark background of orange trees. The confusion between Venus and the Virgin is disturbing. The garden depicted [...]
