The Iris (Dutch: Irissen, English: The Iris) - oil painting (cat. no.: F 601, JH 1699) by Vincent van Gogh, painted in May 1889 during his stay at Saint-Rémy. In May 1889, Vincent van Gogh left Arles and became a voluntary patient at the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. As he was discharged for the first time, he painted views of the hospital garden. One of the first pictures he painted at this time was the famous painting of irises. He mentions them in a letter to his brother Theo and his wife Johanna, written a few days after his arrival: The artist then painted another, smaller picture of a single iris flower. After van Gogh's death, the painting came into the possession of his sister Willemina. Willemina's friend Line Kruysse (1928-1937) was the next owner. After her death, the painting was inherited by C. Kruysse. The painting was probably bought from C. Kruysse by the Amsterdam dealer E.J. Van Wisselingh. On 20 October 1954, the painting was purchased from Wisselingh by the National Gallery of Canada, in whose collection it remains to this day.
