Joan of Arc at the Coronation of King Charles VII is a history painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres painted in 1854. Commissioned by the Director of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Orléans to commemorate Joan of Arc in 1851, Ingres confronted a figure that had been in vogue in the religious and historical iconography of nineteenth-century French art for some fifty years. The work shows Joan of Arc, her eyes raised victoriously to Heaven, which she credited with France's victory, at the coronation of King Charles VII in Reims cathedral, with, on the left, the monk Jean Pasquerel, Joan's chaplain, and three meditating pages. On the far left, the artist has depicted himself as a squire watching the scene. In this work, which fuses the style of Ingres' master, Jacques-Louis David, with the troubadour style, the painter began with a nude model, to whom he added clothes and armour. The scene is marked by ambient light, sumptuous objects and rich colours. The choice of Joan of Arc, a "medieval icon of political loyalty and religious fidelity" personifying the call for national unity after the great fears of 1848, can be seen as a manifestation by the artist of his attachment to the founding values of France. The painting, which appeared at the 1855 Universal Exhibition, was successively displayed in the galleries of the Palais de Versailles, the Luxembourg Palace and the Hôtel de la Présidence du Corps Législatif.
