White Square on White Background (full title: Suprematist Composition: White Square on White Background; Russian: ??????????????? ?????????? - ????? ?? ????? [????? ???????], Souprematitcheskaïa kompozitsia - Beloïé na belom [Bely kvadrat]) is an oil on canvas, painted by Kasimir Malevich in 1918. Part of the Suprematism movement, it consists of a white square painted on a slightly different white background. This work is often considered to be the first monochrome in contemporary painting, and it remains one of the most famous. Malevich used two whites of different origins, "one cold and very slightly bluish, for the square, the other warm and a little ochre, for the background".
