Jeune femme en toilette de bal

Jeune femme en toilette de bal is a painting by the French painter Berthe Morisot, painted in 1879 and housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. In this work, Morisot departed from the canons of official portraiture to seek new and different solutions, closer to the sensibility emerging at the time. The work depicts a seductive young girl wearing an elegant silky ball gown. Whereas academic portraits exalted or enhanced the social status of the person depicted, Morisot preferred to capture the dancer's gaze, attentive and curious, turned towards something that was unfolding beyond the pictorial space, to her right. In this way, the work stands out for its liveliness and fluid freedom, and the resulting impression is one of great immediacy, almost like a photographic snapshot. The young woman, moreover, is plunged with panic into the lush vegetation that surrounds her, whose greenish hues are even imprinted on her dress: this bold choice of colours openly declares the influence of the Impressionists. When the work was exhibited at the fifth Impressionist exhibition in 1880, it won the admiration of the critic Charles Ephrussi, who wrote the following review in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts: " The echo of Morisot's fame had spread beyond the Alps, so much so that the painter immediately sold Jeune femme en robe de bal to the Italian artist Giuseppe De Nittis, who was also linked to the Impressionists (he was even present at the first exhibition in 1874).
