Portrait of the actress Jeanne Samary
La Rêverie, or Portrait of Jeanne Samary, is an oil on canvas by Renoir depicting the young Comédie-Française actress Jeanne Samary in her décolleté. Painted many times by Renoir, she made her debut in 1875 as Dorine in Tartuffe. At the time, she lived in rue Frochot, not far from Renoir's house, and used to come and pose for him. This 56 × 47 cm canvas dates from 1877. It is kept in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow (inventory ?-3405).
When this painting was exhibited at the Third Impressionist Exhibition of 1877, it received rather negative reviews. It depicts the actress in bust form, with a soft, peachy gaze, holding her chin with her left hand. She is wearing a low-cut dress in green and blue with flowers on the bodice.
This portrait was part of Ivan Morozov's collection, confiscated by the Bolsheviks. It was reproduced by the USSR Post Office in [...]
