La Douleur et les Regrets d'Andromaque sur le corps d'Hector son mari (The Sorrow and Regrets of Andromache over the Body of Hector her Husband), commonly abbreviated to La Douleur d'Andromaque (The Sorrow of Andromache) is a painting by Jacques-Louis David in 1783, inspired by an episode from the Iliad and depicting Andromache weeping over the body of Hector, killed by Achilles. The picture was painted to be presented as a "reception piece" for the approval of Jacques-Louis David by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. It was even unanimously accepted at the Salon du Louvre, where it was exhibited. This work is a large oil on canvas, measuring 275 centimetres high by 203 centimetres long. The canvas is signed and dated lower left, and reads "L. David 1783": "It is currently on display at the Musée du Louvre, but belongs to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (inventory D.L. 1969-1), to whom the work was donated by one of David's grandsons, Jules David-Chassagnolle, in 1886. He presented his reception piece on 22 August 1783, where it was unanimously approved by the jury. Later, he drew inspiration from his painting for The Oath of the Horatii, which enabled him to acquire considerable renown. The Sorrow of Andromache is a historical painting inspired by Homer's Iliad. In this scene, Andromache, a widow, mourns her husband Hector, killed by Achilles.
